Southern Snapshot: Mary Ann’s Cafe Sign  0

Southern Snapshot: Mary Ann's Cafe Sign

Cotten’s Downtown had just so many interesting things! We also found the original Mary Ann’s Cafe sign hanging on the wall inside. I remember eating at Mary Ann’s Cafe in the mid-80’s when I was working in the downtown area. I loved their burgers and fries!

Do you remember Mary Ann’s Cafe? Have any special memories there or a favorite menu item? Please comment below or e-mail us at bonveillercher@gmail.com, so we can share your stories!

Fearless Finds: Cotten’s Downtown  3

Fearless Finds: Cotten's Downtown | bonveillercher.com

If you read our post about The Rocket Drive Inn in Jennings, Louisiana, then you know that WE LOVE CHEESEBURGERS!! So, when my husband suggested we check out the newest location of Cotten’s for the blog, we hurried on over.

Cotten’s Famous Hamburgers is known for its location on Oak Park Boulevard, but since November of 2015 they’ve also been providing delicious diner foods at the old Mary Ann’s Café at 110 West Broad Street in downtown Lake Charles.

Fearless Finds: Cotten's Downtown | bonveillercher.com

Called Cotten’s Downtown, this new location has a really cool retro vibe with vintage photographs and newspaper clippings on the wall and even the original Mary Ann’s Café sign. Also, instead of a walk-up and order restaurant, they have a waitstaff to take your orders and bring your food.

You can even watch your food being prepared behind the counter because it’s an open grill with fryers!

Fearless Finds: Cotten's Downtown | bonveillercher.com

The food was delicious (we each had a cheeseburger and shared some onion rings), the staff was fun and friendly, and the environment was interesting and laid back. We will definitely be back!

Have you had a chance to check out Cotten’s Downtown yet? What’s your favorite menu item?

Check out Cotten’s Downtown Facebook page and be sure to use their hashtags #burgersonbroad and #breakfastonbroad if you share some of your grub on social media!

Also be on the lookout for a few Southern Snapshots featuring the art at the diner!

Fearless Finds: The Sloppy Taco  0

Fearless Finds: The Sloppy Taco | bonveillercher.com

Is it Taco Tuesday yet?! Well it’s only Monday, but we have tacos to share with you today! The new rage right now in Lake Charles is the Sloppy Taco food truck, and I was lucky enough to be working in Iowa, Louisiana, when they made a stop there last month!Fearless Finds: The Sloppy Taco | bonveillercher.com

The Sloppy Taco food truck drives and parks around Lake Charles and surrounding areas to sell their delicious foods, and when I saw them they were attending a fundraiser for a local cheerleading team. Since it was our first time to try it, my boyfriend and I ordered a few different items to try. I absolutely loved the Chicken Tacos! The Sloppy Tacos and Ribeye Roll were tough to beat too! There’s so much stuff on the tacos, and the sauces are delicious! For all the food you get, the prices are definitely reasonable.

The Sloppy Taco’s Headquarters is 2500 Kirkman St, Lake Charles, Louisiana, but to see where they’re parked you can go to their website, sloppytacotruck.com, where they have a tentative monthly schedule. Also follow them on Facebook to find out where they’ll be and when!Fearless Finds: The Sloppy Taco | bonveillercher.com

So if you happen to see the Sloppy Taco Truck around town, make an effort to stop and try them out! You won’t be disappointed!

Fearless Finds: Java Joltz UPDATE!  0

Fearless Finds: Java Joltz UPDATE! | bonveillercher.com

Try out a different flavor of coffee? Yes, please! And as usual Java Joltz did not disappoint! We first visited Java Joltz about a year ago (click here to read that post!), and we were very excited to get back and see what’s new and talk about their recent venture into using the Waitr app.Fearless Finds: Java Joltz UPDATE! | bonveillercher.com

Well Java Joltz is cozy as ever! And we love the new chalkboard wall with the menu! They of course had a long list of mouth-watering flavors, so we each ordered one and grabbed a cupcake to share! The cupcakes are from a local baker, Denise Benoit, and wow! It was so delicious! I loved my French Kiss frappe, and my mom didn’t hesitate to gulp down the Latte of the Day, Ferrero Rocher!

Although we didn’t try any out, Java Joltz also offers soups and sandwiches. And you don’t have to leave your house to enjoy any of it (as long as you live near Jennings, of course)! Java Joltz is now apart of the ever-expanding Waitr app. If you’re unfamiliar with the Waitr app, it’s basically a delivery company for a variety of restaurants. Just download the free app, find the restaurant you’re craving, and order! Simple as that!Fearless Finds: Java Joltz UPDATE! | bonveillercher.com

Java Joltz said it’s been a great addition so far, and they can’t wait to see how it expands once word gets out about the app! Check out their Facebook page to keep up to date with their daily specials and events!

Well our love for Java Joltz is still going strong. Our only question is, how about another location closer to us?!

Keep smiling!Lexi

Bon veiller, cher: Fearless Finds - Pint House Pizzaria of Lake Charles, Louisiana offers a wide variety of unique pizzas, beers, gelato, & more! | bonveillercher.com

I get so excited when there are new restaurants in town, and if it’s a favorite of mine like pizza I just have to go! Pint House Pizzaria at 329 Broad Street in Lake Charles opened in July of 2014 and has such amazing pizza combinations, desserts, beers, and more!

Although we opted for a traditional pepperoni pizza because I’m super picky, Pint House Pizzaria offers pizzas like the Atomic Rooster and the Napalm Duck, the latter is made with ranch sauce, two types of cheeses and peppers, duck, and chipotle and srirache sauces! The pizzas are handmade and cooked in a brick oven which makes for an incredible crust that’s both crispy and soft at the same time. While you can of course purchase whole pizzas, they also offer a lunch buffet Monday through Friday from 11 to 1:30 so you can test out a few different pizza varieties. It’s only $8.99 for adults and $5.99 for kids twelve and under.

To wet your whistle, Pint House Pizzaria has a long list of craft beers and rotating kegs. A few with names we couldn’t forget were La-31 Biere Noir, Clown Shoes Tramp Stamp, and Monty Pythons Holy Grail Ale! For non-alcoholic beverages, they have handmade sodas in lots of flavors including Jamaican Cola, Cotton Candy, and Smores. Ice cream sodas, shakes, malts, and beer floats are also on the menu.

(In case you’re wondering, we had water. Yes, we know we are boring, but next time we won’t be!)

Once you’re near full up on pizza and beer, you can top of your meal with fresh, homemade gelato or sorbetto! We had Vanilla Marscapone Chocolate Biscotti gelato, and wow it was so good!! My mom talked with the sweet worker who helped her, and she said she actually made the gelato! You can see her pictured with the gelato case. They’re constantly changing flavors, so you always have something new to try!

The environment is so cozy and warm, and all the staff was super friendly! Looking at their Facebook page, Pint House Pizzaria also hosts local artists on their stage on some Saturday nights. We’re definitely planning a trip back to try more flavors of the pizza and gelato and to experiment with some handmade sodas!

Fearless Finds: The Louisiana Market -- one of the oldest stores in the Cottage Shop District in Lake Charles, Louisiana, with gifts, art, food, coffee, and a warm, inviting atmosphere | bonveillercher.blogspot.comAfter 25 years of business in the same location, The Louisiana Market at 2710 Hodges Street in Lake Charles, Louisiana, has become more than a familiar sight among the Cottage Shops; it’s a tradition. The current owner, Lisa Foreman, began working at The Louisiana Market three years ago with plans to buy it, and in July of 2014 that’s what she did. Her only employees are her family, and they show great dedication and support. Lisa was so warm and inviting, and it was obvious she loves what she does. Most of our visit was spent talking about and meeting her local artists (many to be seen on future blog posts!) and exploring the shop.

Fearless Finds: The Louisiana Market -- one of the oldest stores in the Cottage Shop District in Lake Charles, Louisiana, with gifts, art, food, coffee, and a warm, inviting atmosphere | bonveillercher.blogspot.comThe Louisiana Market has anything and everything Louisiana! “What I try to do is to promote Southwest Louisiana,” Lisa explained as she showed us the wide variety of products, art, and décor she carries. She has cookbooks, dishware, and gourmet foods including Virgin Pecan Oil. You’ll find unique t-shirts and jewelry, most referencing Louisiana. They even make super cute gift baskets for any occasion. Most recently they filled miniature pirogues with goodies for a local Mardi Gras Krewe.

Lisa works closely with local artists selling their works and helping them reach a broader audience. She even connected one with the flag company she buys from, and now the artist’s designs are featured on flags! There are beautiful works all around the shop including watercolor, acrylic, and oil paintings, local pottery, and recycle art.

Fearless Finds: The Louisiana Market -- one of the oldest stores in the Cottage Shop District in Lake Charles, Louisiana, with gifts, art, food, coffee, and a warm, inviting atmosphere | bonveillercher.blogspot.comSpecialty coffee is also available at The Louisiana Market. All the beans are roasted and flavored in Mooringsport, Louisiana, and they are sold by the pound, whole or ground. The flavors are so unique with names like Swamp Gold and King Cake. I actually bought a half pound bag of ground Café Beignet and love it! I can’t wait to go back and try another flavor.

We will definitely be regular customers now and know where to find unique gifts in the future. So whether you need a present for a native Cajun or want to share the Louisiana spirit with a faraway friend, pay a visit to The Louisiana Market to find exactly what you’re looking for!

Fearless Finds: Java Joltz  0

Fearless Finds: Java Joltz-- A cool and creative coffee joint with quirky flavors, a charming atmosphere, and a sweet staff in Jennings, Louisiana | bonveillercher.com
Lately we have been searching for anything Mardi Gras, so when we discovered a local business served a King Cake Latte we had to go try it! Java Joltz is a coffee shop and bookstore in Jennings, Louisiana, (just down the street from the Rocket Drive Inn) that serves soups, sandwiches, and lots of coffee.

Fearless Finds: Java Joltz-- A cool and creative coffee joint with quirky flavors, a charming atmosphere, and a sweet staff in Jennings, Louisiana | bonveillercher.blogspot.comWe walked in and each ordered a blended King Cake Latte, and my mom and Myron ordered a couple sandwiches. While waiting for our goodies we met the owner, Christy Lepretre, to find out more about this cozy coffee shop.

Originally Java Joltz was called Books ‘n’ Java and opened in 2010 at a different location. But in 2013 coffee sales took off and a drive-thru was needed, so they moved to their current location: 115 E. Shankland Suite E, Mid City Shopping Center in Jennings. They have a drive-thru! If only I worked in Jennings…

Fearless Finds: Java Joltz-- A cool and creative coffee joint with quirky flavors, a charming atmosphere, and a sweet staff in Jennings, Louisiana | bonveillercher.blogspot.comAnyway, though you wouldn’t believe it with the extensive and creative menu, soups and sandwiches are a new addition at Java Joltz having been available for about two months. They have such amazing flavor combos, including their best seller the Mayflower which is turkey and Gouda on sourdough with spinach leaves and cranberry pepper jelly (coincidentally the same sandwich my mom and I had been eyeing before ordering!). To order a sandwich, they hand you a list of ingredients that you can check off to make the sandwich uniquely yours. We loved that!

Then we got our coffees. WOW! The King Cake Latte is delicious! It’s perfectly sweet and full of flavor, and they even make it look amazing with purple and green syrup and gold and green sprinkles! Christy told us that after her daughter and an employee created the King Cake Latte last year so many people requested it after Mardi Gras that it’s now available year-round. That’s a problem for me. How am I supposed to try out all the other flavor combinations like Funky Monkey and customer-created Breakfast @ Tiffany’s when this one is always an option!?

After I had already fallen in love with the place, Christy began to tell us where she gets her ingredients from. “I’m all about having fresh ingredients and supporting locals,” she told us. Her coffee beans are locally roasted by Reve Coffee Roasters of Lafayette and sent within 24 hours. This brings me back to my time spent in Austin and their famous “Keep Austin Weird” movement that promotes small, local businesses, and I’m so excited to see something similar taking root in Southwest Louisiana.

Music is also in the air at Java Joltz! Every other Saturday they host a jam session sponsored by Steve Riley and a few others. You can even perform at Java Joltz! The first Friday of every month is open mic night. Songs need to be approved, and the sets are mostly acoustic.

We even got a sneak peek at a few upcoming sandwiches! With Lent starting this week, they will have a buffalo shrimp sandwich on sourdough with guacamole, lettuce, and tomatoes. They’re also serving a twist on the grilled cheese sandwich, the Pepper Popper Sandwich, with cheddar cheese, pepperjack cheese, jalapenos, and banana peppers on wheat berry bread.

Christy and her crew were so sweet, and we really enjoyed our drinks, food, and visit with them. Christy also said she was so appreciative of the community of Jennings and their continued support, it was even bringing tears to her eyes. We can’t wait to go back and already have our orders in mind for our next trip.

King Cake Bread Pudding  1

King Cake Bread Pudding - Seven easy ingredients and one hour to create a mash-up of two favorite Louisiana desserts! | bonveillercher.com
It’s Mardi Gras season here in Louisiana! And, as with any holiday, food and sweets are the second most important part, just behind family. When trying to think of a recipe to share, we wanted to do something a little different than the traditional king cake. Almost immediately mom suggested mixing king cake with our favorite bread pudding recipe from her mom and my Granny. As much as I hate to admit it, I wasn’t too keen on the idea, but really I just wasn’t sure how it would work. Determined to prove me wrong, my mom began scouring Pinterest. Within minutes she stumbled upon a king cake bread pudding recipe at showmeyournola.com! It was such a simple switch! However, to keep it in the family so to speak, we used Granny’s recipe to bring together these two tasty Louisiana traditions. With seven ingredients and a total of about one hour prep and cook time, the results were delicious!

King Cake Bread Pudding - Seven easy ingredients and one hour to create a mash-up of two favorite Louisiana desserts! | bonveillercher.blogspot.com

Ingredients:
1 King Cake (we chose a cinnamon-filled variety)
2 tablespoons of melted butter
1 cup of sugar
2 cups of milk
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
4 eggs
1 teaspoon of vanilla

King Cake Bread Pudding - Seven easy ingredients and one hour to create a mash-up of two favorite Louisiana desserts! | bonveillercher.blogspot.com
Cooking Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Grease a 1 ½ quart baking dish
  • Cut up the king cake into small pieces
  • Combine and mix all ingredients in a bowl
  • Cook for 45 minutes or until top is light brown and there is no jiggle 😉
  • Let cool and enjoy!!

**Note: living in a house built over one hundred years ago, my mom only has a convection oven, so the baking time is based on that appliance. My Granny’s original recipe calls for a one hour baking time, so plan according to your situation.

The result was amazing! We even brought a couple pieces to Granny, the bread pudding queen, and she said, “My bread pudding is good, but y’all really hit it on the head with this one!”

Fearless Finds: Rocket Drive Inn  10

I love cheeseburgers!
Fearless Finds: Rocket Drive Inn -- a blast from the past burger joint in Jennings, Louisiana -- bonveillercher.blogspot.com
Not the fast food prepackaged ones. The real meat, homemade ones I found at my new favorite place, the Rocket Drive Inn. This great find is as old as me. No wonder we connected the first time I sat on the coolest red picnic tables, covered with the scratchings of years gone by.

The atmosphere is so vintage even my seventeen year old son put down his iPhone and dug into his cheeseburger and fries. I knew I had to take Lexi, a fellow cheeseburger lover, and share this literal blast from the past.

We each ordered a cheeseburger, an extra large drink, and one order of homemade onion rings to share for about $14. Not bad for a quick daycation to the 1960’s. Now we can’t wait for summer to head back for some homemade Rocket ice cream (the cold kept us from enjoying some this trip).

I for one am truly grateful to the owner, Joann Leger, for keeping this little piece of nostalgic heaven available for all to enjoy. Next time you’re in Jennings, stop by 1118 State Street or call 337-824-2120 for more info.

If the Rocket Drive Inn happens to be a favorite of yours or you take our advice and try it out, let us know! We’d love to hear about your little visit to the past.
