Huntin’ Gators on the Geaux: Ed Drew Gator  0

Huntin' Gators on the Geaux: Ed Drew Gator |bonveillercher.com

This Gator on the Geaux was an interesting find for us because we had no clue who H.C. Drew was until we did a bit of research. Harrison C. Drew was a businessman and state senator at the end of the 19th century who upon his death left half of his estate to provide educational opportunities to the people of Lake Charles. What an amazing gift to the community!Huntin' Gators on the Geaux: Ed Drew Gator |bonveillercher.com

Ed Drew Gator stands in front of the H.C. Drew Estate at 719 Kirby Street in Lake Charles, and the artist is Susan Fuerst.

Send us a comment or e-mail at bonveillercher@gmail.com to tell us about other Gators on the Geaux around town!

Lake Charles Veterans Memorial Park  0

Veterans Memorial Park

There is lots to see around the Lake Charles Civic Center and along the boardwalk but none is as important and worthy of a visit as the Veterans Memorial Park. Each war is recognized such as the helicopter honoring the Vietnam veterans.

You can even purchase a brick to celebrate your own veteran! For more information on that please click here to be redirected to the City of Lake Charles website.

We encourage everyone to take an afternoon to walk through Veterans Memorial Park and thank all past, present, and future veterans for all they do and sacrifice for us and our country.

Southern Snapshots: Central School Arts & Humanities Center | bonveillercher.com - Photo by CajunKatPhotos

This treasure, the Central School Arts and Humanities Center, is located at 809 Kirby Street in Lake Charles. They don’t make schools like this anymore. Notice the marked “Girls” entrance to the school; this was built in 1912 when boys and girls were separated during school. Now it houses a variety of local businesses and organizations related to the arts including the Lake Charles Symphony and the Children’s Theatre Company. The beauty is all around you, so stop by and check it out!

Fearless Finds: Southwest Louisiana Convention & Visitors Bureau Stop #1  0

Kick off  your Cajun adventure here!! (2)

When driving East down Interstate 10, just after getting off the Calcasieu River Bridge, it’s almost impossible to miss the large, lit-up sign and marquee for the Southwest Louisiana Southwest Louisiana Convention & Visitors Bureau: The first stop for any Louisiana adventure! | bonveillercher.comConvention & Visitors Bureau. But have you ever actually stopped to see what all the fuss is about?! We have to admit, we hadn’t either. However, now that we have we are so excited to let y’all in on one of the best kept secrets in Lake Charles!

This place is the starting line. It’s the beginning of the beginning for any kind of Louisiana traveler, tourists and locals alike! The massive amount of travel information about Calcasieu Parish is phenomenal. Just look at the wall of pamphlets!! It’s broken down by cities, and includes brochures on everything from lodging and accommodations to off-the-beaten-path adventures and sights.

We were lucky enough to have the very hospitable Lynn Bass to guide us around, and she shared some great inside knowledge about the best places to see. She would LOVE to help you find your next roadtrip stops!

The Bureau also has a gift shop where they sell Louisiana t-shirts and souvenirs. There are clean restrooms and many photo ops inside and out (look for our next posts to see the outdoor ones!).

Just out the backdoor is a beautiful view of the lake with a free binocular viewer that lets you zoom in on the Civic Center and lakefront.

Old sugarcane kettle turned into a fountain.

We found so many ideas for future blog endeavors, and even more that we just have to see! So, with two arms full of informational books and pamphlets we left very satisfied and excited to see what our next Louisiana adventure will be!

We loved the Bureau so much, we couldn’t possibly include all the stops on the property in one post, so keep following for stops two through six coming in the next two weeks!

Lake Charles 9/11 Memorial  0

Lake Charles 9/11 Memorial | bonveillercher.com

I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve run down the lakefront boardwalk and never knew I had been so close to two actual steel beams from the World Trade Center.

Memorial Point can be seen on the flags hung from the light posts for the stretch of boardwalk surrounding the Lake Charles 9/11 Memorial, and it stands within a wall of concrete and three-thousand colorful mosaic pieces representing the lives lost. In the center is a fountain with the two beams rising from the water, each with a flag attached. It’s beautiful and unreal and sad to be so near to them.Lake Charles 9/11 Memorial | bonveillercher.com

A few feet away, behind protective glass, is a piece of slab made of limestone from the Pentagon. Inscribed are the names of two locals lost that day, Kevin Yokum and L. Russel Keene II.

The memorial is a lovely tribute to those who died that day and the families they left behind. If you’re a local and haven’t visited yet, go. Make it a priority this weekend. If you’re a tourist in the area, add it to your itinerary. It’s a very humbling sight that all need to experience.

Bilbo Cemetery & the Millennium Statue  0

The Millennium Statue in Bilbo Cemetery in Lake Charles, Louisiana | bonveillercher.com

Our favorite way to find new and exciting ideas for the blog is to just drive around and see where the city brings us! This is how we discovered the amazing Millennium Statue of Jesus Christ. Once we spotted it through the trees, we had to get a closer look!Bilbo Cemetery in Lake Charles, Louisiana | bonveillercher.com

The statue is in Bilbo Cemetery on North Lakeshore Drive, situated off to the side of the Lake Promenade. Unfortunately the cemetery itself is rundown and un-kept with long grass and weeds and part of the fence knocked down and even leaning on a tomb, but none of this took away from the beauty of the statue. The grave of John Jacob Ryan, "Father of Lake Charles," in the Bilbo Cemetery in Lake Charles, Louisiana | bonveillercher.com

It is made of bronze and is fifteen feet tall and is atop an eight foot Labrador green granite base. With a bit of research we discovered the actual name of the statue is “Jesus Christ Our Citizen of the Centuries” and was actually sculpted by a descendant of someone important to Lake Charles and laid to rest in that very cemetery, John Jacob Ryan, Jr., the “Father of Lake Charles!” This artist is Janie Stine Lacroix, and she is from Sulphur.

Bilbo Cemetery and the Millennium Statue are definite must-see spots! We hope that the cemetery will soon be fixed up to match the greatness of the statue itself!

Huntin’ Gators on the Geaux #2: Gris Gris Gator  0

Gris Gris Gator | The second Gator on the Geaux we have found in Lake Charles, Louisiana! | bonveillercher.com

Look at our latest gator find! It’s Gris Gris Gator!! When we first started researching and looking for Gators on the Geaux we found a picture of this voodoo lady gator, and we were crossing our fingers she was still around somewhere! Then, on a misty night, we loaded up in Myron’s truck with Jacob (my husband), and the four of us headed out to Lake Charles to find as many gators as we could!

Thanks to one of the friendly staff members at the Southwest Louisiana Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, we actually had a map with the names and locations of about 70 Gators on the Geaux. Unfortunately, many are no longer in their original spots, so most of the huntin’ was creeping around downtown Lake Charles and shouting when we saw the outline of one in the dark!

We were heading down Pujo street, and there she was!! I got Myron to pull over, and we were so excited it was her! She resides on the side of whatever building (we were way too amped up to look at what the business was inside the building) at 518 Pujo street in downtown Lake Charles. There is a perfectly positioned spotlight on her, so she looks extra eerie in the dark!

She wasn’t our only find that night, so keep watching to find out the other gators we visited that night!

Fearless Finds: The Strand Theatre  4

Bon veiller, cher: Fearless Finds - The Strand Theatre in Jennings, Louisiana, will be showing old movies in 2015! | bonveillercher.com

My mom and I have always been lovers of old movies. We love seeing the fashion and technology of the past, and some of our all-time favorite actors and actresses are from old Hollywood. So you can only imagine our excitement when we found out The Strand Theatre in Jennings, Louisiana, is showing old movies on the big screen all year long, and, as if that wasn’t enough, one of our favorites was the next in the lineup: Pillow Talk with Doris Day and Rock Hudson!

My mom and I watched Doris Day all the time when I was younger, and her movies always feature forgotten things of the past like party-lines and automats. It was so much fun to watch it on the big screen in the quaint atmosphere of the old Strand Theatre. Tickets are only $3! And they have popcorn and drinks for sale, too.

We had so much fun and can’t wait to go back! I’ll definitely be there for Clue in November!

The Strand Theater is located at 432 N Main Street in Jennings. Their next showing is Paint Your Wagon on March 28 at 7:00. Some of their upcoming movies are The Apple Dumpling Gang, Grease, and all three Back to the Futures!

Fearless Finds: Pint House Pizzaria  3

Bon veiller, cher: Fearless Finds - Pint House Pizzaria of Lake Charles, Louisiana offers a wide variety of unique pizzas, beers, gelato, & more! | bonveillercher.com

I get so excited when there are new restaurants in town, and if it’s a favorite of mine like pizza I just have to go! Pint House Pizzaria at 329 Broad Street in Lake Charles opened in July of 2014 and has such amazing pizza combinations, desserts, beers, and more!

Bon veiller, cher: Fearless Finds - Pint House Pizzaria of Lake Charles, Louisiana offers a wide variety of unique pizzas, beers, gelato, & more! | bonveillercher.blogspot.com
Although we opted for a traditional pepperoni pizza because I’m super picky, Pint House Pizzaria offers pizzas like the Atomic Rooster and the Napalm Duck, the latter is made with ranch sauce, two types of cheeses and peppers, duck, and chipotle and srirache sauces! The pizzas are handmade and cooked in a brick oven which makes for an incredible crust that’s both crispy and soft at the same time. While you can of course purchase whole pizzas, they also offer a lunch buffet Monday through Friday from 11 to 1:30 so you can test out a few different pizza varieties. It’s only $8.99 for adults and $5.99 for kids twelve and under.

To wet your whistle, Pint House Pizzaria has a long list of craft beers and rotating kegs. A few with names we couldn’t forget were La-31 Biere Noir, Clown Shoes Tramp Stamp, and Monty Pythons Holy Grail Ale! For non-alcoholic beverages, they have handmade sodas in lots of flavors including Jamaican Cola, Cotton Candy, and Smores. Ice cream sodas, shakes, malts, and beer floats are also on the menu.

(In case you’re wondering, we had water. Yes, we know we are boring, but next time we won’t be!)
Vanilla Marscapone Chocolate Biscotti gelato from Pint House Pizzaria Bon veiller, cher: Fearless Finds - Pint House Pizzaria of Lake Charles, Louisiana offers a wide variety of unique pizzas, beers, gelato, & more! | bonveillercher.blogspot.com

Once you’re near full up on pizza and beer, you can top of your meal with fresh, homemade gelato or sorbetto! We had Vanilla Marscapone Chocolate Biscotti gelato, and wow it was so good!! My mom talked with the sweet worker who helped her, and she said she actually made the gelato! You can see her pictured with the gelato case. They’re constantly changing flavors, so you always have something new to try!

The environment is so cozy and warm, and all the staff was super friendly! Looking at their Facebook page, Pint House Pizzaria also hosts local artists on their stage on some Saturday nights. We’re definitely planning a trip back to try more flavors of the pizza and gelato and to experiment with some handmade sodas!
