Small Town Spotlight: Emily Simon  0

Small Town

Small Town Spotlight: Emily Simon |

One of our first missions when we started this blog was to recognize locals and pay tribute to some of the amazing individuals around us. Finally we bring you Small Town Spotlight where we will highlight a member of a nearby community who is unique and deserving of some recognition!

Our first Small Town Spotlight we have known for many years and watched her grow up for a small time. Emily Simon is a 16 year old native of Sulphur, Louisiana, who is in love with her Cajun roots, and spreads this love through music and dance.

Here’s some of the visit we had with her:

Small Town Spotlight: Emily Simon | bonveillercher.comLexi Hagen: Which instruments do you play?
Emily Simon: The drums and accordion

LH: How old were you when you first started playing and which instrument did you learn first?

ES: I was six and started with the drums. My Pawpaw played the drums, and I wanted to be like him. At first I would just sit on a stool next to him and play on his “ride” cymbal.

LH: What was the first song you learned to play on the accordion?

ES: La Porte d’en Arrière (The Back Door)

LH: Which instrument was easier to learn?

ES: The drums were easier to learn because you really just need to know the waltz and two-step. With the accordion you need to know buttons and pulls, but once I learn a song on the accordion, it’s stuck. Also I learn by ear. It’s much easier for me to learn a song if you let me video you and put some headphones on to watch and listen.

LH: Who inspires you to play?

ES: My Pawpaw.

LH: How is it singing in Cajun French?

ES: It just takes practice, and I’ll sing it to my Paw to make sure I’m saying everything right.

LH: Where do you see yourself going with your music?
ES: All I know for sure is I’ll be playing every weekend.

Small Town Spotlight: Emily Simon | bonveillercher.comEmily went on to tell us that she hopes to someday soon record a CD with her Pawpaw at lead vocals. Her band, Emily Simon and Keepin’ it Cajun, play at several venues around the area, and she sits in with other people’s bands and attends jam sessions whenever she can. She’s an active member of the CFMA and was part of the youth band in the Texas CFMA chapter.

If you would like to learn more about Emily Simon and Keepin’ it Cajun, check out her band’s Facebook page here. You can even book them to play at your event!

Keep watching for another Small Town Spotlight soon, and if you know of anyone deserving of the spotlight, please let us know in a comment below or e-mail us at

Huntin’ Gators on the Geaux: The Red Gator of Big Lake  2

Huntin' Gators on the Geaux: The Red Gator of Big Lake |

It’s a surprise Gator on the Geaux! My boyfriend and I were just driving around Big Lake and spotted this lovely Gator under the carport of a house.Huntin' Gators on the Geaux: The Red Gator of Big Lake |

Luckily the owner was there and was so kind to tell us all about it! Lois Manena said she bought this Gator on the Geaux from a fundraiser in Lake Charles. Originally it was designed as a fisherwoman, but after it was knocked down and broken in half during a storm she had it fixed and repainted. Now she dresses it up for each season and holiday!

Do you or anyone you know have a Gator on the Geaux hidden away at home? Please let us know because we would love to come take pictures and share it!

Fearless Finds: The Sloppy Taco  0

Fearless Finds: The Sloppy Taco |

Is it Taco Tuesday yet?! Well it’s only Monday, but we have tacos to share with you today! The new rage right now in Lake Charles is the Sloppy Taco food truck, and I was lucky enough to be working in Iowa, Louisiana, when they made a stop there last month!Fearless Finds: The Sloppy Taco |

The Sloppy Taco food truck drives and parks around Lake Charles and surrounding areas to sell their delicious foods, and when I saw them they were attending a fundraiser for a local cheerleading team. Since it was our first time to try it, my boyfriend and I ordered a few different items to try. I absolutely loved the Chicken Tacos! The Sloppy Tacos and Ribeye Roll were tough to beat too! There’s so much stuff on the tacos, and the sauces are delicious! For all the food you get, the prices are definitely reasonable.

The Sloppy Taco’s Headquarters is 2500 Kirkman St, Lake Charles, Louisiana, but to see where they’re parked you can go to their website,, where they have a tentative monthly schedule. Also follow them on Facebook to find out where they’ll be and when!Fearless Finds: The Sloppy Taco |

So if you happen to see the Sloppy Taco Truck around town, make an effort to stop and try them out! You won’t be disappointed!

Fearless Finds: Java Joltz UPDATE!  0

Fearless Finds: Java Joltz UPDATE! |

Try out a different flavor of coffee? Yes, please! And as usual Java Joltz did not disappoint! We first visited Java Joltz about a year ago (click here to read that post!), and we were very excited to get back and see what’s new and talk about their recent venture into using the Waitr app.Fearless Finds: Java Joltz UPDATE! |

Well Java Joltz is cozy as ever! And we love the new chalkboard wall with the menu! They of course had a long list of mouth-watering flavors, so we each ordered one and grabbed a cupcake to share! The cupcakes are from a local baker, Denise Benoit, and wow! It was so delicious! I loved my French Kiss frappe, and my mom didn’t hesitate to gulp down the Latte of the Day, Ferrero Rocher!

Although we didn’t try any out, Java Joltz also offers soups and sandwiches. And you don’t have to leave your house to enjoy any of it (as long as you live near Jennings, of course)! Java Joltz is now apart of the ever-expanding Waitr app. If you’re unfamiliar with the Waitr app, it’s basically a delivery company for a variety of restaurants. Just download the free app, find the restaurant you’re craving, and order! Simple as that!Fearless Finds: Java Joltz UPDATE! |

Java Joltz said it’s been a great addition so far, and they can’t wait to see how it expands once word gets out about the app! Check out their Facebook page to keep up to date with their daily specials and events!

Well our love for Java Joltz is still going strong. Our only question is, how about another location closer to us?!

Huntin' Gators on the Geaux: Bowtie Marina's Pirate Gator |

It wouldn’t be Lake Charles without a few pirate Gators on the Geaux, and we found our first one at Bowtie Marina! Although he appears to be missing his headpiece, he still has his weapons in his pockets! This Gator on the Geaux stands on the deck to keep watch over the marina and welcome all boats that arrive!

Fearless Finds: The Gator Chateau  0

The Gator Chateau

We held baby gators!! Even after growing up on the bayou, neither me or my mom had ever held a baby gator before. After all, in the wild where there are babies, there are big mamas! So we were so excited to get to check out the Gator Chateau and get our hands on some gators! (14)The Gator Chateau is located in the Louisiana Oil and Gas Park at 100 Rue de l’Acadie in Jennings, Louisiana, and offers a great opportunity to both learn about and interact with live alligators. They fosters baby gators until they are old enough to go into the wild. While they are being fostered they are hand fed and easily handled.

We got to hold T-Gaston. He was about a year old and appeared to be seriously bored by our enthusiasm! (15)The worker who helped us was very informative instructing us in proper handling as well as educating us about other gator facts. Through a window in the Gator Chateau you can see a few larger gators and even a snapping turtle or two. One of the turtles was said to be over seventy years old!

The best part about the Gator Chateau is it’s free! Yes! It costs nothing to learn a little and get your hands around a baby alligator! So load up the kids and spend a day at the Louisiana Oil and Gas Park. A perfect and inexpensive day could be a little picnic, have some fun on the playgrounds, feed some ducks, and hold a baby gator! (13)

The Gator Chateau is open year-round Monday through Saturday 9am-5pm. From June to September to you can watch them feed the gators on Fridays at 3:30!
